International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on the 8thMarch. The purpose of this day is to commemorate the social, economic, cultural and political accomplishments of women around the world. It is a day that marks the progress made in the advancement of women’s rights and highlights the changes that are still yet to be made.
The month of March is also recognized in countries like the United States of America as Women’s History Month.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #Balanceforbetter which is a campaign which runs all year long. Its aim is to help build a more gender-balanced world. According to the International Women’s Day (IWD) website, gender-balance is not solely a women’s issue but a business issue. The campaign hopes to achieve a more gender-balanced boardroom, government, and more gender-balance in wealth among other things. The aim is to have more female representation in typically male-dominated economic spheres.
It’s sad that in 2019, we still have gender inequality in many parts of the world and in various sectors of life. But thankfully, the worldwide efforts and organizations associated with International Women’s Day are helping to change this by promoting gender diversity in the workplace. A more gender-balanced world is essential for the social, economic and political advancement of society. Representation is crucial in the fight for fairness. Wouldn’t you agree?
Together we can all play a part in building a gender-balanced world. What are your views on this year’s International Women’s Day campaign? What will you be doing to #Balanceforbetter?
